» Council & Committees

The Ontario Council on Graduate Studies consists of the Deans of Graduate Studies (or equivalent officer) of each of the provincially-assisted universities in Ontario.

OCGS has two standing committees - an Executive Committee responsible for the management of the business of OCGS between meetings (subject to subsequent ratification by OCGS), and a Nominating Committee responsible for proposing a slate of nominees for the Executive Committee and for other committees and offices.

Standard appraisal of proposed new graduate programs, and periodic appraisal, on a recurring basis, by discipline, of all existing graduate programs in Ontario, are conducted by the Appraisal Committee which consists of senior members of the professoriate of the member Ontario universities, elected by OCGS.

From time to time OCGS establishes Working Groups to report and make recommendations on matters of importance to graduate education and/or the appraisal process.

OCGS elects the members of the John Charles Polanyi Prizes Selection Committee, which annually selects up to five outstanding young researchers to be nominated for this prize, which was established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to honour Ontario Nobel Prize winning Professor John Charles Polanyi.

OCGS elects the members of the Women's Health Scholars Selection Committee, which annually selects recipients of awards at the Master's, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels. These awards were established with the support of the Ontario Women's Health Council and funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
