OCGS conducts quality reviews of proposed and existing graduate programs in Ontario universities according to the OCGS By-laws and Procedures Governing Appraisals*.  (Click here for current list of OCGS-approved graduate programs).   

In addition, OCGS is responsible for the following:

• informing the Ontario government and the universities of the results of the quality reviews;
  
• promoting graduate studies and research in Ontario;
  
• commenting on government policies regarding graduate studies;
  
• advising the Council of Ontario Universities on matters relating to graduate studies;
  
• promoting best practices in graduate education;
  
• administering the John Charles Polanyi Prizes (English 2009 Announcement), (French 2009 Announcement), (List of John Charles Polanyi Prize Winners: 1987 -2007),(John Charles Polanyi Prizes Selection Committee Membership 2008-2009);
  
• administering the Ontario Women's Health Scholars Program (Ontario Women's Health Scholars Awards Announcement; Winners 2002-03 to 2008-09);
  
• the Ontario/Mexico CONACyT Student Scholarship Exchange Program;
